# refreshCartItemsWorkflow - Medusa Core Workflows Reference

This documentation provides a reference to the `refreshCartItemsWorkflow`. It belongs to the `@medusajs/medusa/core-flows` package.

This workflow refreshes a cart to ensure its prices, promotion codes, taxes, and other details are applied correctly. It's useful
after making a chnge to a cart, such as after adding an item to the cart or adding a promotion code.

This workflow is used by other cart-related workflows, such as the [addToCartWorkflow](https://docs.medusajs.com/references/medusa-workflows/addToCartWorkflow) after an item
is added to the cart.

You can use this workflow within your own customizations or custom workflows, allowing you to refresh the cart after making updates to it in your
custom flows.

> **Note**
>
> If you use this workflow in another, you must acquire a lock before running it and release the lock after. Learn more in the [Locking Operations in Workflows](https://docs.medusajs.com/learn/fundamentals/workflows/locks#locks-in-nested-workflows) guide.

## Steps

- [acquireLockStep](https://docs.medusajs.com/references/medusa-workflows/steps/acquireLockStep): This step acquires a lock for a given key. Learn more about locks in the [Locking Module](https://docs.medusajs.com/resources/infrastructure-modules/locking) guide.
  - [setPricingContext](#setPricingContext): This hook is executed after the order is retrieved and before the line items are created. You can consume this hook to return any custom context useful for the prices retrieval of the variants to be added to the order. For example, assuming you have the following custom pricing rule: ```json { "attribute": "location_id", "operator": "eq", "value": "sloc_123", } ``` You can consume the `setPricingContext` hook to add the `location_id` context to the prices calculation: ```ts import { addOrderLineItemsWorkflow } from "@medusajs/medusa/core-flows"; import { StepResponse } from "@medusajs/workflows-sdk"; addOrderLineItemsWorkflow.hooks.setPricingContext(( { order, variantIds, region, customerData, additional_data }, { container } ) => { return new StepResponse({ location_id: "sloc_123", // Special price for in-store purchases }); }); ``` The variants' prices will now be retrieved using the context you return. :::note Learn more about prices calculation context in the [Prices Calculation](https://docs.medusajs.com/resources/commerce-modules/pricing/price-calculation) documentation. :::
    - **when** (when: {
      return !!input.force_refresh
    })
    - [useQueryGraphStep](https://docs.medusajs.com/references/medusa-workflows/steps/useQueryGraphStep): This step fetches data across modules using the Query. Learn more in the [Query documentation](https://docs.medusajs.com/learn/fundamentals/module-links/query).
    - [validateCartStep](https://docs.medusajs.com/references/medusa-workflows/steps/validateCartStep): This step validates a cart to ensure it exists and is not completed. If not valid, the step throws an error. :::tip You can use the [retrieveCartStep](https://docs.medusajs.com/references/medusa-workflows/steps/retrieveCartStep) to retrieve a cart's details. :::
    - [updateLineItemsStep](https://docs.medusajs.com/references/medusa-workflows/steps/updateLineItemsStep): This step updates a cart's line items.
      - [useQueryGraphStep](https://docs.medusajs.com/references/medusa-workflows/steps/useQueryGraphStep): This step fetches data across modules using the Query. Learn more in the [Query documentation](https://docs.medusajs.com/learn/fundamentals/module-links/query).
        - [refreshCartShippingMethodsWorkflow](https://docs.medusajs.com/references/medusa-workflows/refreshCartShippingMethodsWorkflow): Refresh a cart's shipping methods after an update.
          - **when** (when: {
      return !!input.force_refresh
    })
          - [updateTaxLinesWorkflow](https://docs.medusajs.com/references/medusa-workflows/updateTaxLinesWorkflow): Update a cart's tax lines.
            - **when** (when: {
      return (
        !input.force_refresh &&
        (!!input.items?.length || !!input.shipping_methods?.length)
      )
    })
            - [upsertTaxLinesWorkflow](https://docs.medusajs.com/references/medusa-workflows/upsertTaxLinesWorkflow): Update a cart's tax lines.
              - [updateCartPromotionsWorkflow](https://docs.medusajs.com/references/medusa-workflows/updateCartPromotionsWorkflow): Update a cart's applied promotions to add, replace, or remove them.
                - **when** (when: {
      return !!input.locale
    })
                - [updateCartItemsTranslationsStep](https://docs.medusajs.com/references/medusa-workflows/steps/updateCartItemsTranslationsStep): This step re-translates all cart line items when the cart's locale changes. It fetches items and their variants in batches to handle large carts gracefully.
                  - [beforeRefreshingPaymentCollection](#beforeRefreshingPaymentCollection)
                    - [refreshPaymentCollectionForCartWorkflow](https://docs.medusajs.com/references/medusa-workflows/refreshPaymentCollectionForCartWorkflow): Refresh a cart's payment collection details.
                      - [releaseLockStep](https://docs.medusajs.com/references/medusa-workflows/steps/releaseLockStep): This step releases a lock for a given key. Learn more about locks in the [Locking Module](https://docs.medusajs.com/resources/infrastructure-modules/locking) guide.

## Input

**refreshCartItemsWorkflow**

- `RefreshCartItemsWorkflowInput & AdditionalData`: [RefreshCartItemsWorkflowInput](https://docs.medusajs.com/references/core_flows/core_core_flows_src/types/core_flows.core_core_flows_src.RefreshCartItemsWorkflowInput) & [AdditionalData](https://docs.medusajs.com/references/types/HttpTypes/types/types.HttpTypes.AdditionalData)

    - `cart_id`: `string` — The cart's ID.
    - `promo_codes`: `string`[] (optional) — The promotion codes applied on the cart. These promotion codes will replace previously applied codes.
    - `force_refresh`: `boolean` (optional) — Force refresh the cart items
    - `items`: `any`[] (optional) — The items to refresh.
    - `shipping_methods`: `any`[] (optional) — The shipping methods to refresh.
    - `force_tax_calculation`: `boolean` (optional) — Whether to force re-calculating tax amounts, which may include sending requests to a third-part tax provider, depending on the configurations of the cart's tax region.
    - `locale`: `string` (optional) — The new locale code to update cart items translations. When provided, all cart items will be re-translated using this locale.
  - `AdditionalData`: [AdditionalData](https://docs.medusajs.com/references/types/HttpTypes/types/types.HttpTypes.AdditionalData)
    - `additional_data`: `Record<string, unknown>` (optional) — Additional data that can be passed through the `additional_data` property in HTTP requests. Learn more in [this documentation](https://docs.medusajs.com/learn/fundamentals/api-routes/additional-data).

## Hooks

Hooks allow you to inject custom functionalities into the workflow. You'll receive data from the workflow, as well as additional data sent through an HTTP request.

Learn more about [Hooks](https://docs.medusajs.com/learn/fundamentals/workflows/workflow-hooks) and [Additional Data](https://docs.medusajs.com/learn/fundamentals/api-routes/additional-data).

### setPricingContext

This hook is executed before the cart is refreshed. You can consume this hook to return any custom context useful for the prices retrieval of the variants in the cart.

For example, assuming you have the following custom pricing rule:

```json
{
  "attribute": "location_id",
  "operator": "eq",
  "value": "sloc_123",
}
```

You can consume the `setPricingContext` hook to add the `location_id` context to the prices calculation:

```ts
import { refreshCartItemsWorkflow } from "@medusajs/medusa/core-flows";
import { StepResponse } from "@medusajs/workflows-sdk";
refreshCartItemsWorkflow.hooks.setPricingContext((
  { cart, items, additional_data }, { container }
) => {
  return new StepResponse({
    location_id: "sloc_123", // Special price for in-store purchases
  });
});
```

The variants' prices will now be retrieved using the context you return.

> **Note**
>
> Learn more about prices calculation context in the [Prices Calculation](https://docs.medusajs.com/resources/commerce-modules/pricing/price-calculation) documentation.

#### Example

```ts
import { refreshCartItemsWorkflow } from "@medusajs/medusa/core-flows"
refreshCartItemsWorkflow.hooks.setPricingContext(
  (async ({ cart_id, items, additional_data }, { container }) => {
    //TODO
  })
)
```

#### Input

Handlers consuming this hook accept the following input.

**setPricingContext**

- `input`: object — The input data for the hook.
  - `cart_id`: `string`
  - `items`: `undefined` \| `any`[]
  - `additional_data`: `Record<string, unknown> | undefined` — Additional data that can be passed through the `additional_data` property in HTTP requests. Learn more in [this documentation](https://docs.medusajs.com/learn/fundamentals/api-routes/additional-data).

### beforeRefreshingPaymentCollection

This step is a hook that you can inject custom functionality into.

#### Example

```ts
import { refreshCartItemsWorkflow } from "@medusajs/medusa/core-flows"
refreshCartItemsWorkflow.hooks.beforeRefreshingPaymentCollection(
  (async ({ input }, { container }) => {
    //TODO
  })
)
```
