# Adyen Module Provider

In this document, you'll learn about the Adyen Module Provider and how to configure it in the Payment Module.

The Adyen Module Provider is in beta mode. It has been available since Medusa [v2.22.2](https://github.com/medusajs/medusa/releases/tag/v2.22.2).

Your technical team must register the Adyen Module Provider in your Medusa application first. Then, refer to [this user guide](https://docs.medusajs.com/user-guide/settings/regions#edit-region-details) to learn how to enable the Adyen payment provider in a region using the Medusa Admin dashboard.

## What is the Adyen Module Provider?

The Adyen Module Provider integrates [Adyen](https://www.adyen.com/) into your Medusa application to process payments. It uses Adyen's [Checkout API Advanced flow](https://docs.adyen.com/online-payments/build-your-integration/advanced-flow/), and it supports:

- Card payments, including 3D Secure authentication.
- Apple Pay and Google Pay wallet payments.
- Manual or automatic capture of payments.
- Refunds and cancellations.
- Saved cards for customers with an account.

- The provider only supports cards (`scheme`), Apple Pay (`applepay`), and Google Pay (`googlepay`). It only retrieves these payment methods from Adyen, so Drop-in doesn't show other methods, and it throws an error if the storefront submits a different payment method type.
- Payment methods that complete through a redirect or that Adyen confirms asynchronously through the `AUTHORISATION` webhook, such as iDEAL or bank transfers, aren't supported yet.
- The first capture of a payment always captures the full authorized amount in Adyen. Later partial captures in Medusa only record the captured amount.

## Register the Adyen Module Provider

### Prerequisites

- [Adyen account](https://www.adyen.com/)
- [Adyen API key and merchant account](https://docs.adyen.com/development-resources/api-credentials/)
- [To handle webhooks, the HMAC key of an Adyen standard webhook. Refer to the end of this guide for details on the URL.](https://docs.adyen.com/development-resources/webhooks/)

The Adyen Module Provider is installed by default in your application. To use it, add it to the array of providers passed to the Payment Module in `medusa-config.ts`:

```ts title="medusa-config.ts"
module.exports = defineConfig({
  // ...
  modules: [
    {
      resolve: "@medusajs/medusa/payment",
      options: {
        providers: [
          {
            resolve: "@medusajs/medusa/payment-adyen",
            id: "adyen",
            options: {
              apiKey: process.env.ADYEN_API_KEY,
              merchantAccount:
                process.env.ADYEN_MERCHANT_ACCOUNT,
              hmacKey: process.env.ADYEN_WEBHOOK_HMAC_KEY,
              returnUrl: process.env.ADYEN_RETURN_URL,
            },
          },
        ],
      },
    },
  ],
})
```

### Environment Variables

Make sure to add the necessary environment variables for the above options in `.env`:

```bash
ADYEN_API_KEY=<YOUR_ADYEN_API_KEY>
ADYEN_MERCHANT_ACCOUNT=<YOUR_ADYEN_MERCHANT_ACCOUNT>
ADYEN_WEBHOOK_HMAC_KEY=<YOUR_ADYEN_WEBHOOK_HMAC_KEY>
ADYEN_RETURN_URL=<YOUR_STOREFRONT_RETURN_URL>
```

### Module Options

|Option|Description|Required|Default|
|---|---|---|---|
|`apiKey`|A string indicating the Adyen API key.|Yes|-|
|`merchantAccount`|A string indicating the Adyen merchant account to process payments with.|Yes|-|
|`hmacKey`|A string indicating the HMAC key of the Adyen standard webhook. Medusa rejects all webhook notifications from Adyen if you don't set this option.|No|-|
|`environment`|The Adyen environment to use. Its value is either `TEST` or `LIVE`.|No|`TEST`|
|`liveEndpointUrlPrefix`|A string indicating the prefix of your live endpoint URLs. Find it in Adyen's Customer Area under Developers > API URLs.|Only if `environment` is `LIVE`|-|
|`capture`|Whether to capture payments immediately after authorization. When enabled, canceling an authorized payment refunds it instead, since Adyen can't cancel captured payments.|No|`false`|
|`returnUrl`|A string indicating the URL to return the customer to after a redirect, such as a 3D Secure challenge. Medusa uses it when the storefront doesn't pass `return_url` in the payment session's client data. Adyen requires a return URL, so you must set either this option or the client data.|No|-|

### Multiple Merchant Accounts

To process payments with multiple Adyen merchant accounts, register the Adyen Module Provider once per merchant account, each with a different `id`:

```ts title="medusa-config.ts"
module.exports = defineConfig({
  // ...
  modules: [
    {
      resolve: "@medusajs/medusa/payment",
      options: {
        providers: [
          {
            resolve: "@medusajs/medusa/payment-adyen",
            id: "eu",
            options: {
              apiKey: process.env.ADYEN_API_KEY,
              merchantAccount: process.env.ADYEN_EU_ACCOUNT,
              // ...
            },
          },
          {
            resolve: "@medusajs/medusa/payment-adyen",
            id: "us",
            options: {
              apiKey: process.env.ADYEN_API_KEY,
              merchantAccount: process.env.ADYEN_US_ACCOUNT,
              // ...
            },
          },
        ],
      },
    },
  ],
})
```

## Enable Adyen Provider in a Region

Before customers can use Adyen to complete their purchases, you must enable the Adyen payment provider in the region where you want to offer this payment method.

Refer to the [user guide](https://docs.medusajs.com/user-guide/settings/regions#edit-region-details) to learn how to edit a region and enable the Adyen payment provider.

***

## Adyen Payment Provider ID

The Adyen payment provider is registered and referenced by a unique ID made up of the format `pp_adyen_{id}`, where `{id}` is the ID of the Adyen Module Provider as set in the `medusa-config.ts` file.

For example, if you set the ID of the Adyen Module Provider to `adyen` in `medusa-config.ts`, the Medusa application registers the payment provider with the ID `pp_adyen_adyen`.

## Accept Adyen Payments in the Storefront

The Adyen Module Provider is built to work with Adyen's [Drop-in](https://docs.adyen.com/online-payments/build-your-integration/advanced-flow/?platform=Web\&integration=Drop-in) component in the storefront. The checkout flow is as follows:

1. [Initialize a payment session](https://docs.medusajs.com/resources/storefront-development/checkout/payment) with the Adyen payment provider. The provider retrieves the available payment methods from Adyen, limited to the [supported payment methods](#what-is-the-adyen-module-provider), and stores them in the payment session's `data.payment_methods` property. Pass this property to Drop-in to render the payment methods.
2. When the customer submits their payment details in Drop-in, [update the payment session's client data](https://docs.medusajs.com/resources/commerce-modules/payment/payment-session#update-client-data-from-the-storefront) with the details that Drop-in returns, then complete the cart.
3. If Adyen requires an additional action, such as a 3D Secure challenge or a redirect, the cart completion fails and the payment session's status becomes `requires_more`. The payment session's `data.action` property holds the action, which you pass to Drop-in to handle it.
4. After the customer completes the action, update the payment session's client data with the details that Drop-in returns, then complete the cart again.

The Adyen Module Provider accepts the following properties in the payment session's client data:

- `payment_method`: The `paymentMethod` object from Drop-in's state data.
- `browser_info`: The `browserInfo` object from Drop-in's state data, which Adyen uses for 3D Secure authentication.
- `details`: The `details` object that Drop-in returns after the customer completes an additional action.
- `origin`: (Optional) The origin URL of the storefront, used for native 3D Secure authentication.
- `return_url`: (Optional) The URL to return the customer to after a redirect. If not passed, the provider uses the `returnUrl` module option.
- `store_payment_method`: (Optional) Whether to save the customer's card for future payments, from Drop-in's `storePaymentMethod` state data. This only applies to customers with an account.

For example:

```ts
sdk.store.payment.updatePaymentSession(
  paymentCollectionId,
  paymentSessionId,
  {
    client_data: {
      payment_method: state.data.paymentMethod,
      browser_info: state.data.browserInfo,
      origin: window.location.origin,
      store_payment_method: state.data.storePaymentMethod,
    },
  }
)
```

If the customer's payment is refused, they can submit new payment details. The provider then resets the payment session to the `pending` status and processes the submission as a new payment attempt, even if the customer uses the same card. The payment session keeps `data.payment_methods` until the payment is authorized, so you can render Drop-in again for the new attempt. After authorization, the provider sets `data.payment_methods` to `null`.

### Saved Cards

For logged-in customers, the Adyen Module Provider uses the customer's [account holder](https://docs.medusajs.com/resources/commerce-modules/payment/account-holder) ID as Adyen's shopper reference. When you initialize a payment session for these customers, Adyen returns their saved cards in the `storedPaymentMethods` property of `data.payment_methods`, which Drop-in renders.

To save a card during payment, pass `store_payment_method: true` in the payment session's client data. Guest customers don't have an account holder, so the provider ignores this property for them.

Saving a card during a payment requires the "Merchant Recurring" role for your Adyen API credential. Saving a card without a payment requires the "API tokenise payment details" role.

## Setup Adyen Webhooks

Adyen sends webhook notifications to inform Medusa of payment updates, such as authorizations and cancellations. Refer to [Adyen's documentation](https://docs.adyen.com/development-resources/webhooks/) to learn how to set up a standard webhook.

Then, set the webhook's HMAC key in the `hmacKey` option of the Adyen Module Provider. Medusa rejects webhook notifications with an invalid HMAC signature, or that belong to a different merchant account.

### Webhook URL

Medusa has a `{server_url}/hooks/payment/{provider_id}` API route that you can use to register webhooks in Adyen, where:

- `{server_url}` is the URL to your deployed Medusa application in server mode.
- `{provider_id}` is the ID of the provider as explained in the [Adyen Payment Provider ID](#adyen-payment-provider-id) section, without the `pp_` prefix.

For example, if you set the ID of the Adyen Module Provider to `adyen`, the webhook URL is `{server_url}/hooks/payment/adyen_adyen`.
